Adult braces – not for me, you think! Flashes of a metal-mouthed teenager being picked on in a corny American high school movie fleet across your mind.

But there’s no reason start panicking just yet. Braces have evolved dramatically over the last few years. With a clear aligner like that involved in the Invisalign process, teeth straightening for adults is the most straightforward and discrete it has ever been.

Why get adult braces?

Teeth straightening for adults is definitely about more than just achieving a pretty smile.

Whilst it does give you an unequivocal boost in confidence, there are a number of health benefits to having straight teeth that you should seriously be considering as you grow older.

Having overcrowded teeth, overbites, and underbites can make it difficult to brush your teeth properly, causing a buildup of plaque in unsightly spots, leading to decay and disease.

You may also be experiencing regular headaches or jaw pain from poorly positioned teeth which exert a lot of pressure on your skull, or even gastrointestinal problems from not chewing your food properly.

Using Invisalign invisible braces is a simple process and we at Buttercup 7 Day Dental are happy to lead you through it all.

Common queries and concerns

Am I too old to get my teeth straightened?

No! There is no upper age limit for the teeth straightening process and Invisalign is used predominantly by adults.

Human teeth are always moving around so whilst it’s more desirable to train your teeth into position in your youth, it will always be possible to straighten them years on.

I’m worried I’ll look silly.

As a teenager, braces are more common so it’s likely you’d be surrounded by several classmates with them. As an adult, it’s far less common – but the numbers are growing!

Consequently, you might worry that you will stick out like a sore thumb amongst your peers.

With Invisalign clear aligners, adult braces have become incredibly subtle. You don’t need a mouth full of metal to achieve your straight pearly whites – just a simple see-through plastic tray that is custom-fitted to your teeth. It’s almost impossible to spot you’re wearing anything at all!

Just take our patient Morag as an example – as a trainee GP, she underwent Invisalign treatment without any issues! See her story here.

Am I going to go bankrupt after forking out for this treatment?

Of course not – teeth straightening for adults through Invisalign treatment is a costly process, starting at around £1,500 at Buttercup, but don’t let the price tag put you off.

At Buttercup we offer several finance plans that let you spread the cost of treatment over several months into much more manageable chunks.

Straight teeth provide so many benefits – we think it’s well worth the investment.

I don’t think I could cope with any pain – does it hurt?

There is marginal pain with Invisalign treatment, so if this is of concern to you, then put it out of your mind!

Patients with Invisalign adult braces sometimes note that they experience a tight feeling when they insert their clear aligners, and that it’s more noticeable at the beginning of the treatment. As you progress with treatment, however, it will lessen.

Invisalign pain doesn’t match the awkward discomfort of traditional wire and bracket metal braces. There are no horror stories of clear aligners catching on the inside of your mouth!

why do my teeth hurt

I’m worried I’ll have no freedom with Invisalign adult braces.

For best results, patients should wear their clear aligners for 22 hours a day, only removing it to eat and drink.

When you have a coffee, red wine, or your 3pm pick-me-up biscuit, you’ll need to take out the aligner tray briefly, and brush your teeth properly before putting it back in.

This might seem restrictive but it’s something that Invisalign patients become used to, and the length of the treatment is so short that it is completely manageable.

A major benefit of Invisalign adult braces is that no foods are off limits like with traditional metal braces. Hello, popcorn and carrots!

After you’ve finished your Invisalign treatment, you’ll have to wear a retainer at night several times a week, depending on what your dentist advises, but day-to-day, you’ll have no teeth straightening worries!

The time commitment really puts me off.

Invisalign teeth straightening for adults is not a very long-term process. For many patients, it will take no more than 6 months. For some it lasts longer, between a year and 18 months. Some even achieve results within 3 months!

Put it into perspective – a year with invisible braces versus a lifetime of potential oral health problems and diminished confidence. The commitment seems worth it, right?

Your future self will be seriously thanking you for putting in a little time to straighten your teeth, even if it does seem off putting in the present.
